Abstract

The paper includes the full translation of Winston S. Churchill’s essay United States of Europe with the introduction and additional comments. The essay was published in February 1930 in the Boston-based „The Saturday Evening Post” weekly magazine. The text illustrates the state of the late-1920s European and Transatlantic debate on the economic and political integration in Europe, as well as the British politician’s personal views at that time. In comparison with the better-known Zurich speech of 1946, the translated text also demonstrates continuity of Churchill’s views. The key problems discussed in the Churchill’s essay are: economic ineffectiveness of Europe under the Versailles Treaty system; war debts and reparations, economic depression, and rise in nationalism; need for a new arrangement in European-American relations, as well as the Churchill’s assessment of different concepts of integration: the Paneuropean, the Imperial, and the Anglo-American one. Also, the essay presents the three circles concept which came into prominence after the Second World War.<br>Opracowanie prezentuje pełne tłumaczenie eseju pt. Stany Zjednoczone Europy autorstwa Winstona Spencera Churchilla wraz z wprowadzeniem oraz komentarzami. Esej powstał w 1930 r. na potrzeby amerykańskiego tygodnika pt. „The Saturday Evening Post”. Dokumentuje on stan debaty nad integracją europejską po obu stronach Atlantyku na przełomie lat 20. i 30. XX w., a także osobiste poglądy brytyjskiego polityka w tym zakresie. W zestawieniu ze znanym przemówieniem Churchilla z Zurychu z 1946 r. esej stanowi świadectwo ciągłości jego koncepcji politycznych. Najważniejsze problemy poruszane w eseju Churchilla to: niewydolność gospodarcza Europy w ramach systemu wersalskiego; problem reparacji wojennych oraz kryzysu gospodarczego; wzrost nastrojów nacjonalistycznych; potrzeba zmiany zasad współpracy pomiędzy Europą a Stanami Zjednoczonymi; ocena koncepcji integracji: paneuropejskiej, imperialnej (w ramach Imperium Brytyjskiego) oraz w ramach wspólnoty narodów anglojęzycznych (ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem roli Kanady).
