Abstract

This article analyses the measures taken by the European Parliament in the field of e-sport and examines the significance of the Parliament’s legal output for shaping the European Union’s approach to the virtual competition sector. This study highlights a significant discrepancy between increased activity of the European Parliament and limited response of the European Commission to proposals put forward by MEPs. The research employing dogmatic-legal, systems analysis and critical discourse analysis methods has demonstrated that the European Parliament plays a pioneering role in defining e-sport at EU level and formulating proposals to strengthen this sector. However, the soft law instruments employed by the Parliament have not yet resulted in the establishment of a comprehensive policy in this area.
