Abstract

This article examines the stances of the major German political parties on the rights of the LGBTIQ community in the context of the Bundestag election held on 23 February 2025. The analysis explores the evolution of German political parties' approaches to the LGBTIQ community, the policy proposals concerning LGBTIQ rights included in their electoral programmes, and the electoral preferences of LGBTIQ voters before the 2025 federal election. The study draws extensively on the research of Dorothée de Nève and Niklas Ferch, whose work has significantly contributed to understanding the political attitudes and electoral preferences of the LGBTIQ community in Germany. The main hypothesis of this article posits that polarisation around equality rights reinforces the support of the LGBTIQ electorate for parties consistently fighting against legal discrimination – identified with liberal and left-wing circles, while simultaneously generating opposition to the platform of conservative parties.
